Thinkers’ Delight: How unique do you think you are? Do you embrace self-acceptance? Is this reflected in your daily life or blog?
The title to this entry is not suggestive of a contest about self-centredness. It is in fact about the importance of self-acceptance. I am proud to say I am unique. I have my own style of writing and I will write original content and introduce features unique to this blog. I am a big fan of Louis L’Amour’s words:
“I am somebody. I am me. I like being me. And I need nobody to make me somebody.”‘
How often do we see new kids in the blogging world try to emulate the style of their favorite A-list bloggers? They visit an A-list blogger’s website and go “Wow, wish I can blog like this great guy.”? The first thought that comes to mind is perhaps, “His style works! Maybe I can do something similar.”, and try hard to emulate. But, where will this lead them to, and what are the likely outcomes?
Copying an idol’s style will lead one nowhere. Overtime, he will feel jaded and lost for ideas on how to carry on blogging in his idol’s mould. If there is any achievement at all, the poor fellow has accomplished his mission of promoting his idol’s website. How did these great bloggers attract readers? Why are they the only ones who make it to the top? We could go on and on about how great some A-list bloggers are, without any fruitful results. How about taking a step back and looking within ourselves to find the solutions to the above questions?
Every individual in this world has unique facial features, finger prints, behavior, talent and thoughts. Why not put each individual’s uniqueness to good use? Many A-list bloggers made it because they are unique in their own ways. Take Vic (Blogger Unleashed) for instance. He is passionate about blogging (or vlogging for that matter) and makes it known to his readers. He commands authority and respect because of his passion and knowledge. He has framed himself as an authoritative figure in blogo-&-vlogo-spheres. Can we copy just that and make it big like Vic? I can’t, for sure. I would be lying to myself if I even tried, simply because Vic is an expert at SEO, and I am not.
If you are guilty of trying to be someone you are not and lying to yourself the whole time, stop wasting time living in someone else’s shadows and get down to business. Start by standing in front of a mirror and staring straight at the person looking at you, and repeat Louis L’Amour’s famous words:
“I am somebody. I am me. I like being me. And I need nobody to make me somebody.”
Only when you are able to embrace self-acceptance can you present your unique self, your unique thoughts and your unique designs to readers. Find your own niche, develop your own style and establish your own brand name. That is what readers are looking for, uniqueness. They would go direct to Courtney Tuttle’s blog instead of a Court wannabe’s. Agree?

I wish you all the best.
